Charlotte Church’s rarely-seen son Dexter, 16, made a rare public appearance with his famous mum and there was one very noticeable thing about his appearance
Fans may have done a double take during the BAFTA Cymru Awards on Sunday evening at the sight of Charlotte Church’s plus one. In a rare public appearance, the Cardiff-born singer was joined by her son Dexter, whom she shares with former rugby star Gavin Henson.
Sixteen-year-old Dexter, who bears a striking resemblance to his father, already towers over his mother. He looked dapper in a smart black suit for the star-studded event, which took place at the International Convention Centre in Newport. Charlotte was there to present the Television Drama Award.
Charlotte and Gavin were considered Wales’s power couple of the 2000s but parted ways in 2010, when Dexter was just a baby, after five years together, according to the Mirror.
Gavin, one of the most gifted rugby players of his generation, now runs a pub in the Vale of Glamorgan. Meanwhile, Charlotte, known as the ‘Voice of an Angel’, gained fame at the tender age of 12 with her extraordinary vocals.
Since becoming a mother, she has stepped back from the limelight and now enjoys life as a sound healer at her own retreat. For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter
She discussed her decision with author Izzy Judd on BBC Radio 3 Unwind’s The Music and Meditation Podcast.
“In my own personal journey, I found that it has been a journey of me believing in my own creativity,” she shared. “I think that when you get commoditised as such a young person, you know, my own creativity and artistry wasn’t really centred at all and so it was actually through setting up other things that I really started to reclaim my own creativity.
“But it wasn’t through music, because I had such a lot of baggage around my voice, my creativity, my songwriting, my musicianship, all of that stuff, but yes through creating other things and birthing through other things into the world it made me go ‘Ah I’m really good at this. And I really enjoy it.”
However, she hasn’t completely stepped away from the limelight.
Charlotte features amongst the star-studded cast of Celebrity Traitors alongside Alan Carr, Stephen Fry, Joe Marler, Jonathan Ross and Tom Daley. The award-winning psychological game show kicks off on Wednesday.
Charlotte and Gavin’s romance blossomed 20 years ago, though their connection eventually fizzled out. Just months after revealing their engagement in 2010, the pair decided to part ways.
Charlotte revealed: “When he proposed, I was overjoyed. It was amazing. I really was going to marry Gav and spend the rest of my life with him.
“But then he came back from Norway, and he’d changed, and I’d had time to think. We had both had a change of heart – so we were both of the same mind.”
The former couple now share an amicable bond, both playing active roles in raising their teenage children.
Henson has since found happiness again, marrying his long-term partner Katie Wilson Mould in 2019. He later confessed that the couple had been at odds for a while and realised they needed to part ways for their children’s sake, though they now maintain a cordial relationship.
After hanging up his rugby boots in 2019, he bought a pub which he currently manages with his wife Katie in Wales.
He shared: “I was coming to the end of my career and it had been sat here for 18 months, two years. It was not nice for the village and I needed something to do after rugby and to be busy, not to mourn rugby and get depressed, as they say everyone does. But be careful what you wish for, because this is so full-on. We want to feel like we’ve achieved something with the pub. We’re perfectionists. We’re all about the detail.”
