Today’s Vodacom United Rugby Championship clash between the Hollywoodbets Sharks and Cardiff Rugby at Hollywoodbets Kings Park has all the makings of an exciting tussle.
There is plenty of motivation for the matchday 23, with head coach John Plumtree looking to reward players with a trip to London next week.
“There are opportunities for players in the team because everyone wants to be involved in next week’s final against Gloucester,” he explained.
“I’m sure all the boys will want to be a part of the final.
“There are also some players who will be playing their last game for the Hollywoodbets Sharks so there’s motivation for them, and Sikhumbuzo Notshe is playing his 50th game so his team mates will want to play well for him.
“A lot of these boys turn up week after week without any other rugby, helping to prepare the team, both on and off the field , they have a role in strategy and opposition plays so it’s a nice opportunity for them to play in a URC match.”
In particular, Plumtree will be hoping to see a spirited and competitive effort from his charges today.
“It’s what I want from them and what they should want from themselves: a never-give-up attitude to stay in the fight.
“I’ve always said that if the effort is there, even if there are errors, then I’m happy. But if the effort slackens off then that’s when I get pretty grumpy.”
This relatively young team with some experience in various positions has been given something of a license to have a full go at Cardiff.
“I’m interested to see how the boys go and as much as it’s about individuals, I’m looking to see how they go as a team.”
Cardiff will come here to play, Plumtree said.
“We know they’re going to be pretty tough, the Welsh are good at building pressure and they will come at us with their set-piece.”
After losing 34-13 to the Lions in Joburg last weekend there’s no doubt Cardiff will look to put on a better showing today before heading home.
“They’ll definitely be looking to have a good game and close out their tour on a high note.”
