The Hollywoodbets Sharks host the DHL Stormers later today in a typically highly-charged South African derby match in the return leg of this year’s Vodacom United Rugby Championship.

Head coach John Plumtree is as excited for this game as the fans and the match promises to be an intense clash between two proud unions.

“We have a nice strong front row with Fez Mbatha, Ox Nche and Hanro Jacobs in good form and two big locks in Gerbrandt Grobler and Le Roux Roets while the loose forwards and backs pretty much stay the same,” the coach explained of his team selection.

“We’re looking good and we’ve had a good couple of weeks heading into this game so we feel well-prepared.

“We know we’re up against a very strong Stormers side that we had a great tussle with down in Cape Town. We were on the wrong side of a one-point loss but it was a good game of footie.

“We have a big crowd coming down to the game and we’re looking forward to another tough contest, but I’m sure it’s going to be a very entertaining game of rugby.”

Signed from the Free State Cheetahs last year, flyhalf Siya Masuku has the opportunity to make his URC debut for the Hollywoodbets Sharks and Plumtree looks forward to seeing the 27-year-old in action.

“Siya has been patient, he’s worked really hard over the last four, five months, his conditioning is in a really good space, he’s had a couple of weeks’ training with us and deserves his opportunity,” the coach explained. “Hopefully when he gets out on the park, he’ll show us his skillsets and what he can bring to our game.”

With some of the Springboks on mandatory leave and a couple of injuries to contend with, Plumtree outlined the status of the Bok players in the team.

“Grant Williams is on leave, Eben Etzebeth had a little tidy-up on his patella [knee], but we still have Bongi Mbonambi.  Vincent Koch is coming back from injury and we’re hoping he’ll be available for the game against the Emirates Lions [on Saturday 2nd March]. He’s run really well at training and looking in good shape.

“Lukhanyo Am and Makazole Mapimpi will both be rested for that Lions game but they’re both playing in today’s game.

“We’re going to rotate the Boks although Bongi will be with us because he’s been out for a long time, the same with Vincent.”

With a big crowd all expecting some exciting and intense derby rugby, Plumtree’s expectations meet those of the fans.

“It’s going to be a great day, we have Sharks Fest running as well with plenty of activities. The union is putting on a big show and it’s up to us to go out and make sure that show continues with a really good game against the Stormers.

“We know we’re playing against a quality outfit that’s been together for a fair while. Their rugby programme is really strong at the moment. We know the challenge and it’s a tough one, but we’re looking forward to having the support from our crowd, fans and the people who love us.”
